Parent Support Group
IDALA Support Group for parents of children with learning disabilities
The International Dyslexia Association Los Angeles Chapter, IDALA, is excited to offer a new Parent Support group on the Westside for Parents of Children with Learning Disabilities. This group is intended to provide a safe space where parents can explore, share and talk about the myriad of feelings and experiences that come up when parenting a child with learning disabilities.
Below is a list of some of the topics the group discusses.
- WORKING THROUGH THE DIAGNOSIS AND CO-EXISTING EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS
- GUILT / FRUSTRATIONS / BURNOUT
- THE GRIEVING PROCESS AND DEALING WITH AN UNKNOWN FUTURE
- STRATEGIES TO HELP WITH HOMEWORK / BEHAVIOR / ETC.
HEIDI SHAW, LCSW
For the past 10 years, Heidi has worked as a therapist in a West Los Angeles school with students who have LD and ADHD. She provides individual, group and family therapy while collaborating with the school team of speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists and special education staff. She is an integral part of this staff, attends IEP”s and is also involved in the classroom. Heidi was diagnosed with a learning disability in elementary school and, as an adult, with ADHD.
SHARON SHAW, LMFT
Sharon has been in private practice as a psychotherapist for the past 30 years in Beverly Hills. Her clients include individual, couples, and families facing the challenges of having themselves or parenting a child with special needs. Sharon raised 3 children, two of whom having learning disabilities and ADHD.
